New research suggests that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
